I was told that a new logic board would cost $800 and I only bought the computer for $900... so it has sat on my shelf for a year.

Anyone know how I can get a used logic board for less?

Looks like the hard drive is dead. Can not hear a sound and it does not show up on the desktop when booting from external hard drive.

So planning on replacing it myself.

Ibook--going randomly dark.

my ibook (12 inch) g4 randomly goes dead.

have to do a full power reset(remove battery)

for a while i could get away with a shim in the case, but that has stopped working.

generally works with a clamp just to the left of the track pad.

but with out the clamp the computer will randomly blank out.

I dont have apple care---and I have noticed that the danish government has ordered apple to recall Ibook G4 for similar problems.

any advice on fixing this?

Personally i am kinda frustrated...of the last 5 apple products I have purchased 3 have failed with in 18 months.

thanks

my screen disappeared!

My ibookG4 screen started getting wavy, so I turned it off, waited, and turned it back on. I got disk chatter, but a black screen. When I hit volume, I got noise, and my caps lock lights up, so I think it's the screen. I didn't drop it or anything. Can anyone tell me what happened and what to do to fix said problem?
Thanks!

iBook G4 meltdown

hey, posted this on a few tribes but thought i'd post it here too:
hey mac gods-

so, my iBook G4 is not working properly right now. as of right now, when I press the power button, it turns on and makes a loud wheezing from the fan, then the screen lights up with the Mac Apple and the thinking circle and then the thinking circle stays that way...forever. I actually haven't left it on to see if it actually clicks over yet but have heard I should try.

Events leading up to this: I bought a new digital camera and tried importing my photo's to iPhoto. One of my USB ports wouldn't recognize the camera at all. But the other USB port did right away. There were a few times that I unplugged the USB cable without "properly ejecting the device" before unplugging. *oops* I received error messages telling me so a couple times. Also, I deleted over 200 photos from my iPhoto as well.

I left my machine on all day on Saturday, came back home...and stuck a recently burned CD into it so that I could copy it into my iTunes. Now, normally, when you stick a CD into your machine, iTunes will open automatically and try to identify it, right? well, this time, iTunes wasn't opening at all. I'd click on the icon, the black arrow would pop up and the icon would jump up and down, and then the black arrow would disappear. I tried opening iTunes unsuccessfully more than a few times. I decided I'd power down and restart to see if that'd fix the problem.

Anyway, the wierdest part of this whole trauma is that before I powered down that first time, the Finder Menu on the top of the screen would appear and disappear numerous times, it was almost as if my machine was having a psychotic episode. I'd never seen any Mac do this before and this is what prompted me to just manually power it off. I thought about just letting it do its thing but I kinda got freaked out and just decided to power it off. And ever since then, it won't boot up properly.

A friend pointed me to a power up trick of holding down the open apple key, the option key, the letter P and the letter R, but nothing happened with that. Another friend told me this has happened to him before and its a simple preference setting that needs to be fixed.

I'm just really hoping its not a costly or too huge of a problem. Has anyone experienced this or have any recommendations of what I should do?

Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this!!

General advise on using Bluetooth technology

I've loved and used Apple computers for years, but I am totally new to this new Bluetooth technology.

Now that I have this cool new iBook, I'm wondering what other things I can do besides hook up to wireless internet almost everywhere I go.

I am about to purchase a cell phone with a Bluetooth headset, too. I suspect I could have the computer "talk" to the phone when a cell phone signal is available and a wireless internet connection isn't available to set up a cell phone based wireless signal (instead of using a cable from the phone to the computer), but are there other uses for this Bluetooth stuff?

stupid question of the day: recording sound

This must be simple, but I am somehow missing it:
I want to record the voicemails my boyfriend left on my machine when he was drunk. They are hilarious, and I need them off my vm machine so it can take new messages.

I do not require high quality, just simplicity.
I'd like to have them as MP3's I think? So I could reach them in itunes?

I know I have some internal microphone (thought I'm not sure where)
What software should I use? or utility, or? um? garage band, imovie, or something even simpler? I feel there is a simple answer I am missing.

Fallen iBook

Hi,

My iBook fell while open this morning. Everything still seems to work, with one exception. The lid seems to have come apart at the top of the hinge. This has resulted in a need for me to prop the lid up against something in order to use it. If I don't prop it then there is a large gap between the internal screen frame and the screen itself.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this myself?

Also, I am new to the San Francisco East Bay and could use recommendations of reliable (hopefully affordable) iBook repair places in either the east bay or SF.

Thanks

My sweet little iBook met with an unfortunate accident that slit the membrane of the screen, it seemed to nearly self repair for a while but now the entire screen has nearly split apart. Does anyone know if there are any issues with picking up another iBook (used) and swapping screens? I've been quoted that it would cost a grand to replace the membrane. Any suggestions or advice?

scratched CD's freaks out my iBook

A couple times I've started to import a CD to iTunes and if it's an old beat-up disc, the drive (it's a SuperDrive) seems to get caught in trying to read the same area over and over and doesn't know when to just quit. I can get it to stop and eject the disc, so it's not really a big deal but it seems like it should just throw an error message and quit trying to read it.

Has anyone else experienced this? Where does the fault lie? Is it iTunes, OS X, the SuperDrive, or what?

Thanks,
msi.

Hi All

I got Skye working on my G4 tower with a pc handset, with functional calls to Cornwall at 56k and a friend in Prague over a GPRS modem. All pretty decent.

So anyone use thier ibook/wifi 802.11b?

Also which headset? Mines a bulky thing that looks like a normal phone so not carrying that around with me. Think there are some USB ones that look like the Nokia mbl.

Cheers

OK, here's a weird one...
I'm studying Chinese.. "conversational chinese" (no characters)

I really want to be able to type pinyin (Chinese using the Roman alphabet plus tone marks)

Anyone know how I can do this?
Hopefully it's not super-complicated or expensive

As of now, I'm using Appleworks, not Microsoft Word

I'm new to the whole iBook thing. I just got an iPod and would like to download mp3s from somewhere other than iTunes, but I don't know how to do this. I know on a PC, it was right click, "save target as." What's the procedure for mac?
Thanks in advance,

iBook Buying Tips

Howdy All!

I recently had a Tribe person ask me some questions about buying an iBook and I thought it might be of interest to post those thoughts here. If at all possible, I suggest my clients buy new equipment from a local dealer and get AppleCare on it in case something goes wrong. While the best prices may be through Amazon with rebates and the folks at http://smalldog.com are terrific, it is simpler for most tech-civilians to be able to talk to a real human being. Since there is no repair that can possibly cost less than AppleCare, I usually buy AppleCare and am grateful if that money seems wasted after three years without problems (and the free phone support AppleCare provides is very useful for many people).

With the 12" iBook at $999 or less, I usually suggest people buy a new machine if they possibly can, lest you buy someone else's problems. A machine of known provenance from a private seller is usually the best buy, but a number of resllers (including http://powermax.com and http://smalldog.com) have used machines at fair prices with decent warranties. A lot of the machines you see on eBay that are loaded with "included" software are damaged or stolen, and the software is pirated and bad karma. One of the major advantages of buying a used machine through an authorized reseller is that they will usually have some sort of warranty and offer AppleCare if it is available, giving you three years of warranty from date of PURCHASE (the longest warranty available).

If you have an older iBook or are looking to buy a used iBook, one of the most useful sites in the Mac universe is Low End Mac at http://www.lowendmac.com, specifically the long list of portables at http://lowendmac.com/powerbooks.html which includes model-specific links to every iBook ever made. This will answer most folks' questions about what exactly a particular machine has and how far they can upgrade it.

How much machine you should buy depends on who you are, but most people have very modest needs which can be met by just about any iBook which can run Mac OS 10.3 or 10.4. It is the nature of the computer industry to try and sell more boxes, and basic software that worked in 1990 still works today. That is not, however, what most people want to work with. Realistically, most companies writing software do not want to support machines older than 3-5 years, and Apple will frequently release cool software such as iPhoto that specifically only runs on the latest (or next-to-latest) operating system, as a way to "encourage revenue." Again, as with cars, your best buy is probably a used machine of known provenance (driven to church once a week by a kindly old lady) or "day old bread" (last year's model) from an Apple Authorized Reseller. When a new model is released into the retail stream, there will be backwaters and eddies of older machines, and businesses want to get rid of them, often at a small loss.

VERY FEW users I work with really need more than a basic model computer. Computers are ridiculously overpowered for what we do, and you can do a lot if you know what you are doing. (Remember Conan's secret of steel? The strength of steel is in the arm that wields it.) Other than adding the maximum RAM the machine can hold, the main things to be concerned about are the optical drive (burning CD's or DVD's) and screen size. If you need more hard drive than an iBook comes with, you should probably be looking at an external drive anyway (and this includes most professional video people).

Generally the distinction I make is based on size and price. The 12" is best for people who actually have to carry the thing, while the 14" is best for most folks over 40 or if you need the SuperDrive. I myself use a 12" iBook I have upgraded to a larger hard drive and a dual-layer DVD+-RW drive.

The last big question folks have is between the PowerBook and the iBook.
I personally prefer the iBook because the polycarbonate plastics are stronger and I don't need to impress anyone. If I needed monitor spanning or to hook up to fancier displays I would get the PowerBook, but for the price difference it just isn't worth it to me.

Good articles on making an iBook behave like a PowerBook in varioius ways:

I've been waiting and waiting for this. Daughter is going off to college. Steve came thru just in time this year. This is gonna ship tomorrow (free). Looks like Apple ain't gonna miss back to school buying like they have in the past.

Picked up a 14" w/768mg/iSight/Applecare for $1578 (education prices) plus kept the free mini iPod for myself (silver, personalized: rock your world). Daughter already has a 30g iPod, my son has my old 20g ipod. my shuffle is a blast, but that silver looks too nice. problem is they only come with a USB2 cable (which i don't have on my iBook G4 so the dock and cable will cost around $60, i think. damn...can't get anything for nothin' anymore, can ya?

screen for G3- or any ideas?

Hi there!
My friend let a beer bottle fall on my ibook- and it -unfortunately- hit the screen which has now all colors ! I went to the Apple store and they told me a new screen would be $ 810,17!
Id' rather buy a new one, right?

Does anybody of you guys have any ideas or even an old ibook, which screen I could buy?
Thanks.

My friend dumped a large coffee onto my iBook and shorted something out. I sent it to AppleCare, but they are going to charge me close to the cost of a new iBook.

Any other options available to me?

Found this tribe through someone else's profile from another tribe (BTW, veerrrry nice pics, Beester.).

I have had an 14-inch iBook G4 since January (purchased with insurance money from my dad's passing - was that too much info?), and let's just say it's gone a fair way toward healing some parentally-inflicted psychic wounds...

I'm losing my keyboard letters.

I thought that the letters on the keys would remain but after some powerful typing I'm losing both my "t" and "e" labeling on the keys. I maybe that my type-hunt-and-peck is wearing out the labeling. I know I should have leaned how to type better than the hunt and peck way. I could also trim my fingernails too but that’s never been a problem before.

I recived it more than a week ago and I love the little thing. I got a ferbie w/ 1ghz/30/256/combo. I ordered airport and 256mb of extra ram.

When I put airport in it only had a range of 15-20 feet. A week later I got my extra ram and some how fixed the airports range to it's max.

I really like free wifi'ing with it @ local Seattle cafe's and there are a butt load of them http://www.wififreespot.com/.
