my ibook (12 inch) g4 randomly goes dead.
have to do a full power reset(remove battery)
for a while i could get away with a shim in the case, but that has stopped working.
generally works with a clamp just to the left of the track pad.
but with out the clamp the computer will randomly blank out.
I dont have apple care---and I have noticed that the danish government has ordered apple to recall Ibook G4 for similar problems.
any advice on fixing this?
Personally i am kinda frustrated...of the last 5 apple products I have purchased 3 have failed with in 18 months.
thanks

Re: Ibook--going randomly dark.
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 10:28 AMYou could try calling Apple and seeing if they're still honoring the US recall, but it's been a while, so it may have expired. Give them your serial number and they can check to see if you qualify. If not, you'll either have to get the logic board replaced on your own or replace the iBook (a refurb unit isn't much more expensive than the board replacement). The iBook line was plagued with logic board problems though. If you get anything better, from an Aluminum PowerBook on up, you're not likely to have the same repeat failures.
Here's a DIY fix, if you're feeling adventurous (it's too dicey of a technique for any shop to offer this service):

Re: Ibook--going randomly dark.
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 2:31 PMThe heat gun fix could be an option.
At this point i dont think the G4 ibooks are subject to the US recall--somewhere is a class action suit , i think.
thanks for the link.

Re: Ibook--going randomly dark.
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 2:03 PMThe recall was on the G3 800mhz Ibooks, I know because I owned one. The heat dissipation is one of the primary cause of logic board failure, hence is why Apple switched to Intel chips from Motorola, which were not able to keep the laptop from over heating, this is true esp if you had done lots of multitasking. -

Tue, April 15, 2008 - 9:21 AMThat's right the recall was on the G3s, the G4 iBooks only seemed like they should have been recalled!
